Zimbabwean ceramicist Marjorie Wallace is known for the intricately decorated porcelain ceramics which she and her team create from her studio in the Miombo Woodland of Harare. A graduate of Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town, upon her return to Zimbabwe Marjorie first worked as an art teacher before purchasing Mutapo Pottery in 1992 working alongside her are Jairos Zangira, an expert clay-thrower, and his son Basil who mixes the porcelain. Each piece produced by the studio is hand moulded, glazed and decorated ensuring a one-of-a-kind collectible.
When I started decorating pottery I thought more and more about baskets, how they look and how they are woven. They too are vessels. I saw my task as being no different from the basket makers.”
